Introduction
The Central
Area Health Education Center (AHEC) in partnership with the Colorado
Center For Nursing Excellence has provided and supports this online
RN Refresher Course. This course is timely in the current country wide
healthcare environment nursing shortage. . This is a "learner center"
course with case studies and interactive multimedia challenges to encourage
critical thinking.
Purpose
The course
was developed as a self-directed "anytime-anywhere" program
to provide the opportunity for nurses in the rural areas of Colorado,
which need nurses yet do not have the facilities, expertise and financial
support to develop these programs and for those nurses who for whatever
reason are not able to meet the constraints of scheduled start and end
date courses. This is a learner focused, self-learning computer-based
multimedia course.
Course
description:
This course is designed for the RN who has been away from practice for
over three to five years who wishes to return to staff level nursing
positions in hospitals, long-term care or home care. The course is offered
in five modules and its focus is on adult medical-surgical nursing.
1. Self
Directed Learning
Modules 1-4 is 60 hours of self-directed web based learning utilizing
Web CT through the AHEC network. Activities would include, assigned
readings, background information, case studies, Internet linkage to
other sites for further information and self-testing. The opportunity
is available for the students to establish a community of learners
through e-mail, synchronous chats and asynchronous discussions.
2 Clinical Experience
Module
5 is 120 hours of clinical practicum, skills training and hospital-required
training utilizing "self-assessment" and "competency"
tools under the direct supervision of an RN preceptor. The clinical
experience is individualized for the student based on their background,
education and planned work environment. The students is responsible
for establishing the experience which would be a contract between

3. Enhancements to Learning
PDS refers to the Professional Development System which has interactive
case based scenarios and activities. AHEC has contracted with PDS
to utilize their "Adult Health Nursing" (systems) and "Clinical
Nursing Concepts" modules as part of this program. This is a
great learning tool that encourages critical thinking of the student.
4. The Medical - Surgical Book from Mosby includes a CD/ROM for the
student with case studies and access to the Mosby Course Management
systems with resources for the student.

Clinical
Experience
1.
Module Five is 120 hours of clinical practicum, skills training
and hospital-required training utilizing "self-assessment"
and "competency" tools under the direct supervision of
an RN preceptor. The clinical experience is individualized for the
student based on their background, education and planned work environment.
2.
The experience is a contract between the student and the healthcare
facility and assigned preceptor. Students will be provided skill

clinical experience. (Some hospitals may require a fee for this).
It is highly recommended that the student complete a minimum of
3 days per week to achieve 120 hours in six weeks.
Subject
Matter Experts and Design
The subject
matter experts in this course are all RNs who are certified in their
individual areas of expertise. Education levels range from BSN to Ph.D..
All of the nurses are currently practicing their profession. The designer
of the course is also a nationally certified nurse with several years
of clinical, education and administrative nursing experience with a
masters preparation in instructional design.
Evaluation
and Course Completion
1.
Theory
- Each
module has a multiple choice test at the end. The student may take
the test at any time and as many times as they like. This is to enable
the student to self-evaluate and determine the areas of studies they
need to concentrate on.
- Prior
to starting the clinical the student must complete a 100 question
multiple choice test that is proctored in the facility of their choice.
In other words they need to arrange for this supervised test in a
facility near their home. They must complete the test with a grade
of 75% or better.
- Also
prior to starting their clinical the student must complete the interactive
case studies on the PDS with a grade of 80% or better. They have two
tries to achieve this goal.
2.
Clinical
The student must complete the 120 hours of clinical in the facility
that they have arranged for. They are expected to successfully achieve
80% of the core skill competencies, receive an evaluation from their
preceptor, evaluate their preceptor and update their skills assessment
work sheet.

It is highly recommended that the student complete a minimum of
3 days per week to achieve 120 hours in six weeks.

individual areas of expertise. Education levels range from BSN to Ph.D..

Theory
- Each
module has a multiple choice test at the end.
80% of the core skill competencies, receive an evaluation from their
preceptor, evaluate their preceptor and update their skills assessment
work sheet.

individual areas of expertise. Education levels range from BSN to Ph.D..

Theory
- Each
module has a multiple choice test at the end.
80% of the core skill competencies, receive an evaluation from their
preceptor, evaluate their preceptor and update their skills assessment
work sheet.
